What is Pay-Per-Click?

Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising is the placement of a small ad on the search results page for a specific keyword or keywords in return for a specified payment when a visitor actually clicks on the ad.

This is typically what a Google search engine results page looks like. Areas outlined in red, indicate the locations on the page where PPC ads are typically placed on the search engine results page. All other search engine results depicted on this page are referred to as ‘organic’ search results or natural search results. In order to appear on the first page of Google search results for organic listings, you would need to deplore a search engine marketing campaign.

The most popular PPC search engine is Google and their PPC advertising program is called AdWords. The next most popular search engines are Yahoo!, MSN Live, and Ask.

What makes PPC so attractive is that your business is seen (Google Adwords refers to this as ‘impressions’) and you only pay when visitors click on the ad. Thus, the term “pay per click” means just what it says: the advertiser pays each time a visitor clicks on the ad.
